Underwater ROV for Dam inspection

Underwater ROVs have been proved helpful for many underwater activities in diverse fields. Technology has been adapting and evolving to the changes through the years. Recently ROV in dam inspection has been gaining major attention since it offers safe and affordable operation. Dams, dykes, and embankments need regular inspection since dam safety is essential to avoid major accidents. Traditionally divers were used for dam inspection, but ROVs have proved to be a much more efficient alternative. ROVs in dam inspection Dams are inspected regularly for any cracks or signs of wear and tear. While the checking should be done for the whole dam, reviewing the underwater portion proved to be tricky. This inspection is also done for a newly constructed dam to check the quality of the structure built.  ROVs are remotely operated vehicles that come with multiple electronic survey systems. They can aid dam inspection since they are equipped with HD video systems and imaging equipment, which can

What are the Benefits of Using ROV Technology?

ROVs and USVs have become an integral part of many applications, including dam inspection, surveying, homeland security, and more. The first fully developed ROV came into use in 1953,and the technology became more popular when the U.S. Navy started to pay attention to it. Since then, constant advancements have been shaping the use of ROVs for various fields. Today the underwater ROVs have improved a great deal and are being used for multiple applications.

Benefits of using ROVs

The underwater ROVs come with different specifications, which makes some products preferred for specific purposes. Here are some expected benefits of using Underwater ROVs, which make them preferable in various industries.

1. Safety

Before the underwater ROVs came into the scene, all the tasks were performed by the divers. There are many safety issues when it comes to the divers performing the designated work underwater.

For example, the inspection of the ship’s hull was done by divers before ROVs were used. There is always the risk of collision since various operations like loading and unloading of cargos, support ships monitoring the area, and more take place in the port round the clock.

A second of carelessness can easily injure the diver in case of heavy traffic at the port. But with Underwater ROVs this is not a problem since the equipment can even inspect critical areas without any safety issues.

2. More depth and dive time

The ocean is often viewed as a place of unexplored mysteries and it makes deep water explorations a common occurrence. While divers are still used in some cases, there is always the problem of the deep water pressure, taking a toll on the divers.

On the other hand, the underwater ROVs can efficiently work at a depth of 250m and more. Also, while the divers usually take a time out every 30 minutes or 1 hour, the ROVs can remain underwater for several hours.

3. Cost and maintenance

The initial cost of purchasing an ROV might be higher than hiring the divers, but you can use it regularly once purchased. Underwater ROVs come with robust design, and thus there is not much you will have to spend on their maintenance. It can survive harsh environments and several primary missions before it will need a repair.

4. Quick and easy to use

Where there is a diving team involved, there is paperwork since it involves human lives. But with the underwater ROVs, there is no such requirement, and thus it can be quickly deployed saving you a lot of time.

ROVs usually come with a simple design, and so with minimal training, a person would be able to master the controlling of the equipment. There aren’t many technicalities involved, and thus it would be easier to hire a controller.

5. Clearer results

When divers are involved, you will have to communicate the data you need and the images to be captured. But with most underwater ROVs come high-definition cameras, GPS, imaging sonar, and more, thus helping you capture the results better.

You can direct the ROVs to capture the required images, and in case of navigating through murky waters, you can let the ROV record. These images and videos can be documented and reviewed later.

6. Reach inaccessible areas

There are missions where the areas to be inspected are inaccessible to the divers. For example, pipeline surveys are better to be done with the help of underwater ROVs since the compact size of the equipment makes it possible to reach even the confined areas.
